Grit, Growth, and the Climb: Lessons from My Conversation with John Donnelly on Building Leaders in Life and Lending

Some conversations stay with you long after the cameras stop rolling. My recent interview with John Donnelly, Executive Director of Sales at Service First Mortgage, was one of those moments.

We covered everything from leadership to mindset to mountain climbing — literally. But beneath the stories and the laughter, this episode hit a question that every mortgage advisor, entrepreneur, or leader wrestles with:

“How do we find that one thing that motivates us so deeply that we never stop climbing toward it?”

Finding the “Why” That Drives You

Both John and I started in the mortgage industry around 1998. Back then, it was chaos — fax machines, phone rooms, and gut instinct. But what kept us in the business wasn’t the grind; it was the growth.

We talked about how success in this industry is never about chasing the next deal — it’s about discovering your why. John put it beautifully when he said that servant leadership means:

“I want more for people than I want from them.”

That line stopped me. Because that’s the essence of what we’re all trying to build — businesses that actually serve people, not just transactions.

Systems Are the Bridge Between Vision and Reality

We both laughed remembering our early years — when “systems” meant a yellow pad and a landline.

But as John and I reflected, one truth stood out:

Without systems, passion burns out fast.

I’ve seen it time and again — mortgage advisors who have the drive, the knowledge, even the charisma… but they can only do so much alone.

You can’t scale chaos.

The moment you start building systems and empowering people, everything changes.

That’s when your business stops being a job and becomes a legacy.

“At some point,” John said, “you have to start putting systems in place because you can’t work any harder — it won’t get you further.”

That one sentence summarizes what it took me decades to learn.

When you finally let go of doing everything yourself, you unlock exponential impact — not just for you, but for every family you serve.

The Power of Grit and Growth

John’s story of summiting Mount Kilimanjaro was the perfect metaphor for leadership.

He didn’t climb it to post a photo — he did it to prove that growth always demands discomfort.

When he said he committed to the climb publicly before he even knew who would go with him, I smiled — because that’s how vision works. You step forward before the path is clear.

In business, the mountain never gets smaller. The oxygen doesn’t get thicker.

You just get stronger.

And as we talked, I realized how much that same principle has shaped my own life and leadership. The seasons that stretched me the most were the ones that built the character I now rely on to lead Ethos, coach mortgage advisors, and raise a family.

Servant Leadership in the Modern Mortgage World

There’s a lot of noise in our industry — rates, tech, compliance, competition. But leadership has never changed.

The best leaders serve first. They show up consistently. They put their people before their numbers.

That’s what John and I both believe deeply: servant leadership isn’t soft — it’s strategic.

Because when you genuinely want more for your people than from them, they move mountains with you.

I see this every day at Ethos. The advisors who grow the fastest aren’t the ones chasing the next loan — they’re the ones pouring into their teams, refining their systems, and building lifelong client relationships.

The Big Takeaway

Every leader reaches a point where working harder doesn’t work anymore.

That’s the moment you have to grow differently — through clarity, systems, and purpose.

So here’s my challenge to you:

Find your Kilimanjaro.

Define the goal that scares you just enough to wake up early again.

Tell the world you’re going after it — then build the systems and team that will carry you to the summit.

That’s the heartbeat of The Way Podcast: exploring how grit, growth, and leadership intertwine to create lasting impact — in life, business, and legacy.
